A candid checklist of what actually shapes a great Mediterranean charter — from lead times and guest lists to preference sheets and APA management.
Start earlier than feels necessary. For high-summer weeks in July and August, the strongest yachts are booked six to nine months ahead. Shoulder-season charters in May, June, September and October give more room to compare — but even there, three to five months of lead time widens the shortlist meaningfully.
Fix the region and the guest list before the yacht. A yacht that performs beautifully in the Balearics can feel wrong in the Cyclades, and a cabin configuration that suits eight adults will not suit two grandparents, four parents and six children. Sequence: region, group, dates, then yacht.
Take the preference sheet seriously. The document the yacht sends before embarkation is the single most useful input the crew receives — dietary requirements, favourite drinks, sleep patterns, water-toy interests, dietary allergies for children. A thoughtful preference sheet turns the first evening into something that already feels tailored.
Understand APA before you sign. The Advance Provisioning Allowance covers fuel, food, beverages, marina fees and communications — typically 25 to 35 per cent of the base fee, topped up during the week if the group cruises hard or entertains heavily. It is reconciled at disembarkation with receipts; unused funds are refunded.
Brief the crew on tempo, not just meals. Some groups want long lunches and slow afternoons at anchor; others want three anchorages a day and dinners ashore. Telling the captain and chief stew the tempo you want — before embarkation — matters more than any specific request.
Keep contracts on MYBA where possible. The MYBA charter agreement is the industry-standard contract, well understood by owners, captains and central agents. Non-MYBA contracts are workable but need closer review; LYC Mediterranean handles that review as part of the brokerage.
